About the Campus Community Band

Located in the village of Potsdam in the North Country of the State of New York, The Campus Community Band is an inclusive organization of adult musicians of all ages, abilities, interests, and backgrounds from the surrounding communities, private and home schools, and area colleges. Members perform on variety of instruments including woodwinds, brass, percussion, drum-set, keyboard, electric guitar, and bass.
Led by Dr. Caron Collins of the Crane School of Music from 2009 to 2019 the band and it's related musical groups rehearse every Tuesday evening when SUNY, Potsdam is in session. Currently, the band is directed by visiting assistant professor, Dr. Peter B Lewis.
The purpose of the Campus Community Band is to explore a variety of member selected music and original compositions in various instrumental combinations as designed by it's members and always includes our concert band. Other instrument combinations may include jazz combo, rock group, bucket band, improvisation ensembles, or chamber groups. We accomplish this through the Curious Collaborative Creativity (CCC), an inquiry approach to musicianship. This approach has been featured in the June 2014 and December 2016 issues of Music Educators Journal, the national peer reviewed journal of the National Association for Music Education. Dr. Collins has also presented this approach for the College Music Society, the Suncoast International Music Education Research Symposium, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Research Conference, and the NAfME National In-service Conference.

We share our musical talents by contributing to a deeper understanding of the music, enriching the music making experience, and extending our mission to the greater community. Guest artists, composers, and educators participate each semester with us such as: Jodie Blackshaw, Len Mackey, Frank Battisti, Dan Bukvich, Arthur Frackenpohl, Julie Hunter, Kevin Mixon, John O'Reilly, David Heuser, Rob Grice, and Doug Rubio.
The band share a public session twice each year in December and May through an "Informance" rather than a performance. The focus of our "Informance" is to involve the audience creatively as partners in the musical experience. Each "Informance" shares a meaningful message of social and cultural awareness, designed by the members of the ensembles.
